An unusual waxgill (Hygrophoraceae family), as many waxgill species are brightly coloured. This one is easily missed as it appears very dark, blending in with all the debris on the forest floor.

The dark colour is due to black fibrils that cover the cap and the stipe

The gills are an orange-red.
