Family: Balantiopsidaceae

In New Zealand there is only one genus, Balantiopsis, in this family. This genus is found only in the southern hemisphere. Balantiopsis species can be easy to confuse with the Schistochilas.

Balantopsis convexiuscula

This one forms clumps of light green foliage on damp soil and rotten logs.

It does not always show this red colouration.

The pinky structures at the tips of some of the branches are where the female part (archegonium) is. After fertilisation, it develops into a fleshy pouch -like structure called a marsupium. The sporophyte grows from the marsupium.

Balantiopsis rosea

This plant was found growing on a wet bank at the edge of the bush.
